The Ministry of Health and Public Health Agency is carefully following the latest information on the spread of Novel Flu in the world. At the moment there are no registrated suspicious or confirmed cases of Novel Flu in Latvia. However, the people in Latvia are asked to evaluate the need of going to regions touched by this infection.
Today, at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers the Ministry of Health informed the Ministers about the spread of Novel Flu in the world and Latvia health care system’s preparedness in case if illness with Novel Flu will be recognized. Representatives from Public Health Agency informed that the monitoring of flu illnesses is taking place and it will allow to detect the spread of Novel Flu within inhabitants. General practitioners, emergency medicine physicians and health care specialists in medicine institutions are informed how to act when having patient that might be infected by Novel Flu.
At the airport “Riga” there is provided information to travellers who are returning from or going to the regions touched by the infection on how to protect oneself from possible infection and what to do in case when the first symptoms of Novel Flu appear. During the holidays health care services will work in heightened regime and in case of any infection threats inhabitants will be informed about necessary measures.
Acting Secretary of State Mr. Rinalds Mucins today flew to Luxembourg in order to represent the opinion of the Republic of Latvia at theextraordinary meeting of EU health ministers on Novel Flu infection. EU Health Ministers will discuss draft Council conclusions on influenza A/H1N1infection (Novel Flu) in order to coordinate national efforts to contain the spread of the virus.
At the moment World Health Organization has determined the 5th level of pandemic threats (out of 6) which means that several group illness cases have been registrated but transmission of the virus from person to person is still limited. The version of the virus with fast spread possibility has not been formed but the virus has better adapted for human and there is serious risk of pandemic.
We already have announced that symptoms of Novel Flu are similar to seasonal flu indications: sudden beginning, headache, fever, heightened body temperature, muscle aches, dry cough etc. In few cases diarrhoea and vomiting are being observed.
