American scientists have found the cause of baggy lower eyelids that come with aging. It appeared that the fat expansion in the eye socket is the origin.
Until this time plastic surgeons thought that these “bags” appear as a result of weakening or breakening of the orbital septum, which works as as cover that holds the fat in the place. That’s why the most common surgical treatment of this cosmetic deffect was based on strengthening this septum .
But recent studies of researchers from University of California showed that fat tissue is increased with age and it is more likely that the fat increase causes the baggy eyelids rather than a weakened ligament. The study looked at MRIs of 40 subjects (17 males and 23 females) between the ages of 12 and 80. The findings showed that the lower eyelid tissue increased with age and that the largest contributor to this size increase was fat increase. According to the results authors of the study (Dr. Sean Darcy and Dr. Timothy Miller) think that a blepharoplasty (surgical treatment for baggy eyes) procedure should almost routinely involve fat excision, not only dealing with strengthening of the ligament.
However, weakening of ligament and fat expansion (although their role in pathogenesis of baggy eyelids is significant), are not the only factors that contribute to this problem. That’s why researchers recommend that surgeons evaluate each component and address them accordingly in an individualized approach to blepharoplasty.
All the surgeons that work with H&T medical tourism agency are highly qualified, have great experience in performing such kind of operations and practicing individual approach to the patient.
